Two new presumptive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Alberta — one in Calgary and another in Edmonton.

These mark the province’s third and fourth presumptive cases of the novel coronavirus.

A woman in her 30s from Calgary is marked as the third presumed case of COVID-19. Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta chief medical officer of health, said she was in close contact with who someone had recently traveled to Europe, including Ukraine, Turkey and the Netherlands.

The fourth presumptive case is a man in his 60s in Edmonton who was aboard the virus-stricken Grand Princess cruise ship, which is where three of the four cases in Alberta can be traced back to.

Both people are recovering in isolation at home.

“I want Albertans to understand that our public health measures are doing precisely what they were intended to do: detect new cases and take immediate action,” said Hinshaw. “These individuals have been isolated and actions are being taken to prevent the infection from spreading.”

Health officials have contacted anyone close to those affected and they have been asked to self-isolate for two weeks. They will be actively monitored for symptoms.

While the risk to Albertans remains low, Hinshaw said this could change in the coming weeks. It is likely there will be new cases in the days ahead.

Albertans are recommended to clean their hands regularly, avoid touching their face, to cough or sneeze into their elbow or sleeve, dispose of tissues appropriately and stay home and away from others if they feel sick.
