Two more scorching days expected for Calgary, as heat warning extended

Calgarians beat the heat on the Elbow River at Stanley Park on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020.

Calgarians can expect a few more days of sweltering temperatures as a heat wave settles into much of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada has extended heat warnings for Alberta from Fort McMurray in the north down to the Canada-U.S. border. There are also heat warnings throughout central Saskatchewan all the way to Manitoba.

In Calgary, temperatures are forecast to peak at 33 C on Monday and Tuesday, before moderating to a somewhat more comfortable 26 C by Friday. The only rain expected is Thursday night, with a 60-per-cent chance of showers.

Environment Canada is urging residents to reschedule outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day and monitor children and seniors for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The heat wave has created extremely dry conditions in southern Alberta, where much of the region is under

fire restrictions or outright bans

. Vulcan County and the city of Lethbridge have declared fire bans until further notice, and fire restrictions are in place for Cypress County, Crowsnest Pass and Foothills County south of Calgary.

It’s been a relatively quiet year for wildfires in Alberta, compared to 2019 when about 883,414 hectares were consumed. According to a recent report from AccuWeather, the fire season across Canada has been well below average with just over 2,500 fires as of early August, compared to the 10-year average of 4,000 fires.
