The Edmonton zone remains a hotspot for Alberta’s active COVID-19 cases, as the province reported 82 new infections on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Alberta Health Services’ Calgary zone — which extends north to Didsbury, east to Gleichen, south to Claresholm and west to the Rocky Mountain parks — accounts for just over one-quarter of the province’s 1,107 active COVID-19 cases.

The new cases reported Wednesday brought Alberta’s tally of total cases to 12,501 since the pandemic began. Two more deaths related to coronavirus infections were also reported, upping the province’s fatality toll to 227.

The province tested more than 9,000 people for COVID-19 on Tuesday, meaning around 0.9 per cent of those tests produced positive results.

A total of 11,167 people have recovered from the virus in Alberta.

The Calgary zone has 294 active cases, including 10 people currently being hospitalized. One of those COVID-19 patients remains in intensive care.

There have been 117 coronavirus-related deaths in the Calgary area since March.

Across the province, 48 people infected by the virus remain in hospital, including 12 in intensive care.

The Edmonton zone continues to lead the province in active cases, with 631.

With the upcoming school year approaching, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, stated Wednesday that all teachers and staff in the education sector

are encouraged to get tested

for the virus.

The province has completed 846,681 COVID-19 tests since the start of the pandemic.

Hinshaw is scheduled to hold her next briefing on Thursday afternoon.
