The suspect in a case of mid-day gunplay in a high density, inner-city Calgary neighbourhood made a bid for bail on Tuesday.
Provincial court Judge Anne Brown heard lengthy submissions from defence lawyer Rebecca Snukal and Crown prosecutor Rose Greenwood on whether Samuel Deverze should be released, or kept at the Calgary Remand Centre, pending trial.

At Snukal’s request, Brown imposed a publication ban on the hearing, which included evidence and the submissions made in favour and against release.
Deverze, 28, was arrested March 22, after an exchange of gunshots near the 1500 block of 7 St. S.W.
He faces three firearm-related offences as well as an allegation of discharging a firearm at a person with intent to wound, maim, disfigure or endanger their life.
The latter charge carries with it a minimum punishment on conviction of four years in prison.
Police said witnesses in the Beltline community reported seeing the occupants of two vehicles shooting at each other before driving away.
In searching for the shooters, police located both vehicles, which had been abandoned, said Sgt. Jim Dalidowicz.
Dalidowicz said a suspect was found hiding near the Lougheed House a few blocks from the scene.
No injuries from the shooting were reported.
“There were a lot of witnesses to this, it was right in the back alley in broad daylight. Pretty brazen,” said Dalidowicz.
Deverze also faces two unrelated charges from last Oct. 16, of assault and mischief to property.
Brown will hand down a decision on Friday.
