Report: NBC Sports declines to discuss 'Monday Night Football' Al Michaels trade with ESPN

Apparently there won’t be a media trade after all.

According to the New York Post, NBC Sports has declined to engage in trade talks with ESPN concerning the availability of Al Michaels for part of its “Monday Night Football” franchise.

“We look forward to Al completing his contract and calling ‘Sunday Night Football’ games on NBC,” Greg Hughes, an NBC Sports spokesman, told the New York Post.

The Post had reported earlier that ESPN was interested in bringing in Michaels to do play-by-play for the network in a dream pairing with Peyton Manning. The Post reported that ESPN has been in talks with Manning to take over for current lead analyst Booger McFarland, who remains under contract.

The Post reports Michaels, 75, has two years left on his deal to call “Sunday Night Football” alongside analyst Cris Collinsworth, and because NBC has Mike Tirico on its roster, it would have a path to trade Michaels if the network changed its mind and if Michaels was interested in making a switch.

NBC originally acquired Michaels in a trade with ESPN in 2006 for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

ESPN is negotiating with Manning after it lost out on a bidding war with CBS over analyst Tony Romo, according to the New York Post.

ESPN currently has McFarland paired with play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore for “Monday Night Football.”
