Fecal bacteria swimming ban lifted at Chestermere Lake beach

The public beach in Chestermere is considering charging people who do not live in the townsite. Monday, July 27, 2020.

One of three Chestermere Lake beaches hit with a fecal bacteria contamination advisory has been reopened for swimming.

On Thursday, officials with the city just to the east of Calgary said the swimming ban has been lifted for Anniversary Park Beach, though the advisory implemented six days ago still remains for Sunset Park and Cove Beach.

“Recent results from the past three sample events show that E. coli levels have decreased and now meet provincial water quality guidelines for recreation,” says a statement posted Thursday by the city.

“The additional testing for Sunset Park and Cove Beach will determine water quality safety and sources of the bacteria.”

Deepwater swimming has also been given the green light.

Results for those two beaches — which remain open though with a swimming ban — should be available at the end of this week.

The higher-than-acceptable levels of contamination in the lake were detected by testing done by a private company, with subsequent action taken in consultation with Alberta Health Services, said the city.

The sources of fecal matter in Chestermere Lake can originate from livestock, wildlife, dogs, humans and aquatic vegetation.

Such contamination can result in gastrointestinal illness and skin, eye and ear infections, according to AHS.

The swimming bans were enacted as some of the hottest weather of the summer descended on the Calgary area.
