Diapers, other garbage left in Alberta parks after services shut down

Winter camping has been closed at Alberta’s provincial parks and the province is reminding people to help keep sites clean amid a shutdown of services due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Parks remain accessible, but facilities like toilets, picnic shelters and warm-up huts are closed, Alberta Environment and Parks stated online.

“This weekend we noticed garbage, used tampons, diapers, and even human waste next to our facilities! Help us keep parks clean,” it tweeted on Sunday.

“Whatever you take in, take it back out.”

Camping at provincial parks was halted for the winter season last Thursday. Customers will be provided a refund for unused nights, the province stated, while bookings for winter campsites beginning after March 19 have been cancelled.

“This approach is the same as the federal government is taking with national parks. All events and programs have been cancelled,” Alberta Environment and Parks stated.

“While using the parks, Albertans are reminded to practice appropriate social distancing.”
