Corrosion forces city to close part of 5th Avenue flyover until at least April

One lane of the 5th Avenue flyover heading north out of downtown will be closed for repairs beginning Friday, Aug. 28, 2020.

A portion of one of the four lanes on the 5th Avenue flyover out of downtown will be closed for at least seven months, starting Friday.

According to the City of Calgary, recent inspections revealed corrosion that affects the capacity of part of the bridge.

A portion of one of the middle lanes will be closed to prepare for rehabilitation work on the bridge, set to begin in April 2021.

The flyover was built nearly 50 years ago in 1972, and it takes drivers over the Bow River, connecting them from downtown to Memorial Drive and Edmonton Trail.
