The Calgary Board of Education is eliminating 70 per cent of its school bus attendant positions ahead of the upcoming school year.
The school board confirmed the job cuts to Postmedia Friday. Last year, the CBE had more than 230 school bus attendants. These people work with special needs students as they make their way to and from school.
“As we align our service to similar levels that are offered by other metro school boards, the number of attendants has been reduced to approximately 70,” the CBE said in a statement.
“They will continue to provide enhanced support for our most vulnerable students.”
The CBE said staff would still support students attending Christine Meikle and Emily Follensbee schools, which both serve students with developmental disabilities.
Some other students will also still have school bus attendants, with the CBE saying others “will be supported through enhanced safety plans.”
The school board also said it had not yet finalized the number of attendants it would have for the 2020–21 school year, saying they are still adjusting services for new registrations.
