Calgary police have laid charges against a Calgary Remand Centre correctional peace officer who allegedly assaulted four inmates more than a year ago.
Police began their year-long investigation into the alleged assaults in March 2019, when the Crown Prosecutor’s Office asked them to look into allegations of a correctional officer using excess force.
All four alleged assaults took place on Feb. 21, 2019, police say. The first occurred when the officer allegedly hit an inmate when responding to a disturbance in a cell. The other three allegedly took place later in the same day, when the officer responded to a fight between inmates. Police say their investigation revealed that the inmates had stopped fighting and were complying with the officer’s orders but the officer proceeded to assault each of them, including using pepper spray on one inmate.
Heera Singh Chahal, 29, is charged with one count of assault with a weapon and four counts of assault causing bodily harm. He will next appear in court on April 15, 2020.
