The provincial death toll remains at 235 as the province marked no additional deaths on Wednesday but reported another 127 COVID-19 cases, bringing the active total to 1,176 in Alberta.
Almost 9,240 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours, meaning about 1.37 per cent came back positive. The Edmonton zone has the highest number of active cases at 625, followed by 362 in the Calgary zone and 137 in the North zone.
The province has tested over 729,500 people since the pandemic took hold in March.
There are currently 48 Albertans in hospital with seven patients in the ICU. Almost half of the hospitalizations are in the Edmonton zone while 11 are in the Calgary zone and nine in the North zone battle COVID-19 in care.
More than 30 outbreaks are active in the province, including 21 long-term, supportive living and acute care facilities in addition to a handful of private gatherings, meat plants and religious ceremonies. Seventeen of the outbreaks are in the Edmonton zone.
In Calgary, outbreak sites include the Peter Lougheed Centre, Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre, Carewest Sarcee, Generations Calgary, Cargill Case Ready, Fledglings Educare Centre, Lilydale chicken processing plant and three separate private gatherings.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, reminded Albertans to be diligent when seeing friends and family.
“It’s possible to hold safer gatherings but we must be diligent,” said Hinshaw on Twitter, offering four tips to limit potential exposure to the novel coronavirus. These included keeping gatherings small, meeting outside rather than inside, asking guests to wash their hands and physically distance and keeping a written list of attendees for at least two weeks.
Almost 11,800 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Alberta.
