AHS to focus COVID-19 testing on groups at high risk of local exposure

Alberta Health Services announced Monday it would no longer administer COVID-19 tests to travellers who have returned to the province since March 12, instead focusing on “groups at highest risk of local exposure.”

Travellers who returned to Alberta after March 12 and have mild symptoms are advised to self-isolate at home and away from others, AHS said in a news release Monday morning.

AHS said the new testing protocol will prioritize groups at highest risk of local exposure and at-risk populations.

“Changing our testing protocols will allow us to focus Alberta’s testing capacity on those most at risk,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health. “This is consistent with the approach happening across Canada. It will enable us to strategically use our testing resources.”

The change is effective going forward, so anyone who has already been told by Health Link that they will be tested will still get tested, said the AHS release.
